Description

An Edward VII silver gilt and enamel presentation key, by Charles Weeden, London 1905, the shaft chased with acanthus leaves, topped with the arms of the Duke of Argyll and the Borough of Hammersmith in full colour enamel, 2.3ozt 13.50cm (5in)
Provenance: This key was given to the 9th Duke of Argyll by the Mayor of Hammersmith at the opening of the Carnegie Central Library, 24th July 1905, and is presented with a copy of the 'West London Observer' dated 28th July 1905 reporting the ceremony and noting that 'The Mayor gave the Duke a gold key as a memento of the occasion' The 9th Duke of Argyll, John Douglas Sutherland Campbell, (1845-1914), Marquis of Lorne married Princess Louise, 4th daughter of Her Majesty Queen Victoria in 1871. He was Governor-General of Canada 1868-1878 and later served as an MP for South Manchester.
