Description

An Arts & Crafts burr oak square occasional table, possibly designed by Philip Webb, 1872, the top carved with 'AS' monogram and a eagles to each corner, with carved repeating edge raised on four turned and carved legs on four turned feet, united by stretchers, one dated 1872 56 x 55 x 55cm (22 x 21 x 21in)
Other Notes: A similar example sold at Tennants, Leyburn, 22 July 2010, lot 1947 for £3,000. Philip Webb was a central figure within the Arts and Crafts movement. Like Henry Wilson (see Lot 100), Webb also trained as an architect. He was a close friend of William Morris and with him designed Morris’ home, The Red House in Bexleyheath, now belonging to the National Trust. Webb also designed furniture for the company Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. Edward Burne-Jones bought one of his tables for his home in Kensington Square.
