Footnote: 'Stuart crystal' jewellery originated following the reign of King Charles I who was executed in 1649. He was the second of the Stuart family of British monarchs who reigned from 1566 to 1714. Following his execution, his followers began to wear, sometimes in secret, rings with locks of his hair, initials, or with the King's image to show their sympathy and loyalty and these were covered with a slice of faceted rock crystal. As with many trends, it evolved, becoming a personal memento for the well-to-do, worn in remembrance of a family member or loved one and rings were often decorated with a skull, a lock of hair, bits of silk, twisted gold wire cypher initials, or gold angels, cherubs or crowns. 'Stuart crystal' jewellery is now rare and extremely collectable.

Condition report: In overall very good condition. Abrasion to facet edges of the rock crystal. Wear and tear to engraving and mount consistent with age.
