Alexander Gulyaev (Russian, 1917-1995) Night Raid, Berlin, 1959 oil on card 31 x 43cm (12 x 17in)
Provenance: Artist's studio, St Petersburg Roy Miles Gallery, London, where acquired by the present owner (label verso) Gulyaev entered the Tashkent School of Art in 1933 and then the Repin Academy of Arts in 1937. During this time, he was taught by, amongst others, the Soviet painters - Cheptzov and Leonid Ovsiannikov. He served in the army during the Second World War and his experiences would provide the inspiration for much of his later work, as is demonstrated in the present lots.
