Time of Peace - Goats, lambs and figures resting on a clifftop, a view of Dover in the distanceoil on canvas74 x 109.5cmFootnote: The present composition is based on Sir Edwin Landseer’s painting, Time of Peace, which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1846 as no. 53 and engraved by T L Atkinson and F Stacpoole in 1850. Landseer’s original and its companion, Time of War, were destroyed in 1928. A copy by James Harnett Parish is in the Dover Collections.Condition report: 107 x 142cm (framed)The painting is executed in oil on a canvas support which is unlined. The canvas tension is slightly slack but the picture is in plane. There is an area of raised paint at the upper left corner with a few small losses. The paint layer is in a good, stable condition. The painting is compromised by layers of varnish which have become very yellowed and degraded. In areas the varnish has developed its own network of age cracks and has become glittering and friable. There is a layer of surface dirt present with a few fly spots.
