Scarborough oil on canvas 24 x 34.5cm

Footnote: Provenance: E Stacey-Marks Ltd, 120-122 Terminus Road, Eastbourne, Sussex, 28th May 1974; The Portallion family, Marsham, and by descent The present composition is closely based on Turner’s watercolour of Scarborough, c. 1825, from his ‘Ports of England’ series. The original watercolour, now in the Tate, was engraved in mezzotint by Thomas Lupton and published in 1826.

Condition report: Oil on canvas which has been lined. The paint layer is in a stable condition but has suffered from wear and abrasion in the past. There are numerous areas of retouching across the surface which are well matched to the original. The varnish is clear and even. The moulding on the frame is cracked but stable.
