Description

'Major Kleist on the battlefield near Kunersdorf, 12th August 1759' inscribed with title lower centre, signed indistinctly lower right in Cyrillic and dated 1824 pen, ink and watercolour on laid paper 45.7 x 55cm

Footnote: The scene depicts the death of the German poet and cavalry officer Ewald Christian von Kleist (1715-1759) after he was mortally wounded in the battle near Kunersdorf, present day Kunowice, Poland. The present watercolour is presumably directly copied from an engraving of this subject by Friedrich Gottliev Berger (1713-1797) after Daniel Niklaus Chodowiecki (1726-1801).
