Portrait of Thomas Coventry (1578-1640), later 1st Baron Coventry of Aylesborough , head and shoulders, in a wide ruff with his purse of the office as Lord Keeper of the Great Seal oil on canvas 70 x 53.5cm

Footnote: The present lot is a copy after the portrait of Thomas Coventry by Cornelius Johnson of 1625, recorded as being at Montacute House.

Condition report: Oil on canvas which has been lined. The picture is in plane with good tension. There is an old damage in the treasury bag which has been repaired. The paint layer is stable. There is some wrinkling to the paint layer in the background and around the sitter's head. Scattered retouchings are evident and the sitter's beard and hair appear to be reinforced. The varnish is uneven with matte patches. The frame has losses to the moulding and gilded surfaces.
