Description

A traditional Dutch red coral bead necklace and small Dutch brooch, the necklace composed of short variable drum shaped beads to a pierced square section clasp of bead, wirework and polished navettes, length 39cm; together with a brooch designed as two bead and wirework open Catherine wheels set side by side on a band curved to their shape, the pin with Dutch oak leaf mark for 14ct gold (pre-1953), and tests for that, length 2.4cm (2) Weight of brooch 2.72g . It is in generally good condition for age, with a few unremarkable losses to the wirework, wear and tear, but all seems to be original, and the hook clasp also has the oak leaf assay mark, and partial maker's mark.Gross weight of necklace 52.71g. Diameters of beads variable - 7.8-10mm; thickness 4.3-7.7mm. The beads are quite evidently old, show all the natural striations and colour of good quality red coral and no evidence of dye or any other treatment. The clasp is missing three little polished navette details; the string is tired and poorly attached so the necklace needs re-stringing.
