Description

A Tournai plate, circa 1763, painted in puce by Michel-Joseph Duvivier, the central vignette with a coastal scene with a galleon setting sail and a group of figures in the foreground, above a gilt trellis device, the spirally moulded border with floral sprays, moulded basketweave and gilt rim, gilt crossed swords and star mark in gilt above the initials ID in puce, possibly for the artist, 23cm diameter
Provenance: Mawley Hall, Shropshire Other Notes: This plate is from a service whose former 19th century owners, the Groutaiers de Resquin, believed it to have been commissioned by Mqr. de François-Antoine de Méan (1756-1831), last Prince-Bishop of Liège.
