About this lot

Description

A Scandinavian birch mangling board and roller, probably early 19th century, the rectangular board mounted with a carved horse handle (2) Originally, the mangling board was used to smooth out linen or clothing as it passed through a mangle, before later being discarded for the flat iron. A mangling board was used in conjunction with a roller, whereby material was wrapped around the roller, placed on a flat table, and then the mangling board was passed backwards and forwards over the roller until the fabric was smoothed
