About this lot

Description

central claw set round brilliant cut diamond with an approximate grading of fancy intense purplish pink and believed to originate from the Argyle mine of Western Australia, estimated approximate weight 0.15ct, surrounded by six claw set round brilliant cut diamonds, estimated total approximate weight 0.25ct, head diameter 7mm, full width shoulders, 'D' shaped shank, size N, Birmingham hallmarks for 950/1000 standard platinum, weight 4.5g

Footnote: Pink diamonds are one of the rarest natural colours of diamond on earth and the Argyle mine is the only known significant source, producing over 90% of the world's supply. Even so, less than 1% of the Argyle mine’s total diamond output is pink and for every one million carats of rough diamonds mined there, only one carat of pink diamonds is recovered. One of the mine managers once commented, 'A good analogy for the scarcity of pink diamonds here would be if one year's diamond production filled a dumper truck (and it doesn't, by the way!), the amount of pink diamonds in that production would not even fill the ashtray'! Due, in part, to their extreme rarity, the mine is set to close at the end of 2020 which will undoubtedly make these stones even more scarce and valuable. Most pink stones recovered are of small size, with stones of over 0.50ct being exceedingly rare collector's items.
