About this lot

Description

the Austro-Hungarian stick with marks for Vienna, 800/1000 standard silver, maker's mark illegible, L shaped cast top section 11cm in length, featuring scrolls and chequerboard panels around the upper body of a horse in a pose reminiscent of the dressage 'Airs above the ground' positions, the front with a vacant scroll edged cartouche, dark hardwood stick with rubber ferrule, overall length 89cm; the parasol handle by Christopher Walker, oversized silver ferrules each end with Chester marks for 1893/96 decorated with bright cut foliate designs, the main body of carved ivory, monogrammed terminal, vacant cartouche and base metal threaded section, overall length (ferrule to ferrule) 16cm (2)

Footnote: 'Airs above the ground' are a series of classic dressage movements in which the horse leaves the ground. It is possible that there may be some connection with this stick and the Spanish riding school in Vienna, where the silver top of the stick was tested and marked. The school is dedicated to the training of horses in classical dressage. It is an item of quality which would have been the property of a well-to-do gentleman at the time.
