About this lot

Description

woven with two birds amidst trees and a river, with buildings in the distance and set within a scrolling foliate border, 230 x 236cm

Footnote: Provenance: Sotheby's Monaco, 22nd June 1986, lot 491 Alternatively known as ‘Forest Work’ or ‘Garden’ tapestries, verdure tapestries flourished in popularity from the 15th to the 18th century. While verdure tapestries were popular across the continent, the production was mostly limited to textile factories in the Low Countries and France, with notable centres of production including Oudenaarde in Belgium, and Abusson and Lille in France. Typically depicting forest and woodland scenes, verdure tapestries are characterised by their viridescent tones and intricate foliate designs. As the form developed through the centuries, the woven designs became more expansive and complex and from the 17th century began to incorporate architectural structures. The present lot is likely to have been created in the La Marche region of France, in either Aubusson or Felletin, around 1700.
