Description

A good collection of Royal letters and documents, 18th and 19th century. Included are: Geo IV 1820 signed document giving custody of idiots and lunatics to the Lord Chancellor. Geo III 1788 enquiring about his estates and animals; another 1789 raising the corps to relieve the marines at Botany Bay; another 1793 with directions for royal journeys; Queen Charlotte 1811 writing of the happy effects of a visit by the Archbishop of Canterbury to the king; Geo III signature to a document signed by Pitt; various other documents signed and clipped signatures; also - letters from William IV, Edward Duke of Kent and Princess Elizabeth (1799), also various other documents signed, including Paymaster General for troops abroad; and 2 verses by James Hadfield (tried to assassinate Geo III in 1800) written from Bethlem Hospital. In addition are letters from Sir Robert Peel, autograph list of Lunacy Commissioners with a note, 2pp., c.1835, Lord Brougham, Wilberforce, Samuel Whitbread, etc. Several items with provenance to past London auction sales and Maggs Brothers.
