About this lot

Description

the oval portrait, probably of King George III, in left profile, with powdered, curled and pigtailed hair, red jacket with blue sash and the Order of the Garter badge, the mount with a border of white round cut pastes, the back with a glazed panel of neat mid-brown hair in a crossed pattern, with gold initials GR superimposed, to a bright cut scalloped border, the mount engraved on the back 'Sophia from G'; small suspensory loop, now with safety chain; length 3.7cm (Dimensions: h: 3cm w: 2cm d: cm )

(h: 3cm w: 2cm d: cm )

Footnote: Other notes: There are many portraits of George III but the one on which this miniature is based has not been traced - though it is very like one by Allan Ramsay circa 1762 (Ramsay, and his studio, are known to have produced about 150 portraits of the King, from 1757 until the painter's death in 1784). The Sophia to whom the portrait was given may possibly have been Queen Charlotte, George III's wife, whose first name was Sophia, or their fifth daughter Princess Sophia, or perhaps his niece Princess Sophia Mathilda of Gloucester: by the mid 18th century the name was popular in aristocratic and royal circles, so the choice is wide.

Condition report: One stone loose in the frame.
