Footnote: Barnards lay claim to being probably the oldest manufacturing silversmith in the world. The original company can date its roots back to the mid 17th century, with members of the Barnard family traceable back to 1773. The business was owned over the years by some of the most distinguished English silversmiths, including Thomas Whipham, Charles Wright, Henry and William Chawner and John Emes. The firm was taken over in 1977 by Padgett and Braham, who had already taken over, Wakely & Wheeler and WH Manton and went on to take over Garrard's insignia department in the 1980s. The firm finally closed in 2006. Harrison brothers & Howson can trace their roots back to Sheffield in the early 1800s with members of the Harrison and Howson families traceable to 1847.
