Description

§ William Pye (British, b. 1938), Eight Elbows, 1968, chrome plated steel, stamped 'PYE' signature and dated 1968, numbered 2/6 and '25', Redfern Gallery label to underside 33 x 20 x 26.50cm (13 x 8 x 10in)
Literature: The work is featured in a two page spread in the artist's monograph, 'William Pye, his work and words' 2010, published by Brown & Brown (pages 52-53) Other Notes: 'Eight Elbows' was one of a series of small sculptures first exhibited by Pye in his second solo show at the Redfern Gallery, London. Although an abstract composition - like much work of the time - it was influenced by the rapidly evolving cultural production and industrial terrain of the 1960s. Literally consisting of eight 90-degree steel elbows welded together, Pye's use of 'the tube' was a conscious departure from modelling in order to lower 'immediate sensuality' and mask the effort involved in its production. It employs Pye's trademark. Our thanks to Tristram Pye for his assistance with this note.
In good condition, very light surface pitting only.
