Footnote: The only woman to appear in Anderson’s series, The Lacemaker depicts Dorcas Ing, of Long Crendon. Aged 87 at the time of the preliminary sketches, Ms Ing had sadly died by the time of publication. Dorcus is shown in Anderson’s engraving, with her Flemish style bobbins balanced upon her cushion as she produces a length of Bucks Point Ground lace. Ernest ‘Ernie’ Sims, the rakemaker, was born in December 1894 and, after leaving education aged 14, worked for his father. Anderson’s 1948 engraving show's Sims operating a foot operated clamp whilst using a home-made brace and spoon bit to drill holes in the rake head. Mr Sims died, aged 88, in 1983.
