Description

§ Philip Sutton, RA (British, b.1928) Israeli Landscape inscibed to verso with title and dated '1951/2' oil on canvas (unframed) 123 x 91cm (48 x 35in) Other Notes: Born in Poole, Philip Sutton was educated at the Slade School of Fine Art and is best known for his colourful portrayal of landscapes and still life scenes. 'Israeli Landscape' (1951-52), like many of his other earlier works, highlights the influence of Matisse on the artist's bold use of colour. Sutton had his first solo show at Roland, Browse & Delbanco in 1956 and his works were featured in retrospectives at the Leeds City Art Gallery and the Royal Academy. Canvas taught, cleaned, and subsequently varnished. Extensive craquelure evident in places, particularly about 2/3 down the canvas, where pressure seems to have been applied in a manner conducive to concentric craquelure. Canvas unframed, and edges covered with masking take.
