During World War II he served in the Royal Navy, working as a camouflage officer. He went on to become a member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists in 1947. He received his most noteworthy commission in 1953 when he painted the return of Her Majesty The Queen from the Commonwealth Tour, depicting the Royal Yacht Britannia passing under Tower Bridge. The painting was presented to Her Majesty The Queen and was hung in the drawing room of the Royal Yacht. It is now in Frogmore House, Windsor.
