§ John Humphrey Spender (British, 1910-2005) Village Dustbin Day signed and dated 'H Spender 48' (lower right); artist's label to verso 'The Great House, Lavenham, Suffolk' oil on canvas 33.50 x 50.50cm (13 x 20in) Provenance: The Redfern Gallery, London, 1949 (label verso) Other Notes: John Humphrey Spender was a notable British photographer, printer, and designer, whose works proved popular throughout Britain during his own lifetime. He studied History of Art at the University of Freiberg, where he spent time with renowned literary figures including Christopher Isherwood. During this period, he also gained exposure to continental European avant-garde photography. Becoming a member of the Mass Observation movement, Spender is particularly known for his photographs, pictures of daily life, and working-class communities. Following his affiliation with this movement, Spender regularly contributed to the highly successful magazine, 'Picture Post', and was appointed as an official war photographer. Extensive cleaning and subsequent retouching along the top half of the board. Small flakes of paint missing in portions of the sky. Minor tear to the left edge and some flaking off of paint towards the right edge. There is also a small white mark (possibly made by pencil of chalk) towards the bottom left.
