Footnote: Best known for his role as dress designer to Queen Elizabeth II for over 20 years, Thomas’ fashion designs have been praised for their restraint and elegance. Born in Middle Barton, Oxfordshire, Ian Thomas studied fashion at Oxford College of Art, before being apprenticed to Norman Hartnell in 1952. After spending 17 years alongside Hartnell, Ian Thomas established his own label in 1969 and was awarded a Royal Warrant as a dressmaker shortly thereafter, in 1973. In addition to dressing The Queen, Thomas also famously dressed Princess Anne, Margaret Thatcher, and the Duchess of Kent.
