Footnote: Provenance Sale; Sotheby's, London, 24 Nov 2004, lot 6 Henry Lamb described the monocled sitter of this chalk portrait as his ‘first patron’. Grant Richards (1872-1948) was a British publisher and writer who established his eponymous publishing house in 1897, before completing his first novel, Caviare , in 1912. Despite two crippling bankruptcies, Richards is remembered for his significant contribution to the publishing business. In 1909, Henry Lamb produced the present portrait, along with drawings of the poets A.E. Houseman and John Mason, for Grant Richards during a visit to his home, near the Lizard Peninsula, Cornwall.
