About this lot

Description

dark almost black patina, numbered 5/VI 78cm high

Footnote: Provenance: Purchased from the O'Hana Gallery, 13 Carlos Place, London W1, the receipt dated 31 January 1973, previously acquired from Bettina Ehlich (née Bauer), the artist's widow Although his early training and career centred around the graphic arts, it is sculpture - particularly his renderings of children and animals - for which Georg Ehrlich is best remembered. Thought to depict Ehrlich’s own daughters, the present lot, Two Sisters , was originally cast as a private memorial, but was later sold, in 1947, to Essendon Primary School, Welwyn Garden City, as part of the Hertfordshire schools’ initiative. The tenderness of the two figures and the plasticity of form can be similarly observed in Ehrlich’s 1951 work, The Young Lovers , which now stands in the gardens of St Paul’s Cathedral. Elected an associate of the Royal Academy in 1962, and having exhibited with the Royal Academy on ten occasions as well as at various other venues both domestic and international, Ehrlich’s impact upon the landscape of British sculpture should not be underestimated. Other examples of his work can now be found at major institutions, including the British Museum, the Tate Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
