Frederic Whiting was born at Hampstead, London, and trained at St John's Wood School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools before pursuing his studies at the Académie Julien in Paris. He went on to teach at Heatherley School of Fine Art and to serve as a war correspondent for The Graphic in China during the Boxer Rebellion (1899-1901), and in Manchuria during the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905). Frederic Whiting garnered much success as a portrait and equestrian artist, exhibiting at the Royal Watercolour Society, the National Portrait Society as well as the Royal Academy. He was often likened to Sir Alfred Munnings, as he painted numerous famous jockeys of his time. Among his well-known commissions are an equestrian portrait of His Majesty King George V in the National Portrait Gallery and a portrait of Her Royal Higness The Princess Elizabeth and Her Royal Highness The Princess Margaret riding at Windsor housed in the Royal Collections at Windsor Castle.
