Description

§ Eric Newton Atkinson (British, b.1928) Joanna oil on board label to verso 'Rome Scholarship in Painting 1953' 40 x 36cm (16 x 14in) Other Notes: 'Joanna' occupies a unique place within Atkinson's overall output, deviating as it does from his more typical subject - the abstracted landscape. Stylistically, however, Atkinson's flat perspective and separation of his surroundings into colour and form is very representative of his wider style, bearing some affinity to the later work of Bloomsbury Group artists, such as Duncan Grant. Atkinson had solo shows at the Redfern Gallery in 1954 and 1956, and his work was exhibited across Europe, America, and Canada from the 1960s onwards. Atkinson now has work in numerous public collections, including the Leeds City Gallery. Craquelure along the grain of the wooden board. A small white paint drip is evident underneath the music book. Overall, has been cleaned and touched up.
