§ Dan Murphy (American, born 1942), Aluminium kinetic, 1992, gold anodised aluminium to a clear acrylic base, signed and dated 63cm (25in)
Other Notes: Dan Murphy was born in Chicago and created his first sculpture in 1976, whilst studying law at the University of North Carolina. Having taken the sculpture to New York and received a positive response, he decided to pursue a full time career in sculpture. Materials used by Murphy include aluminium, stainless steel and brass. He bends and manipulates the metal in order to create large, circular shapes and then mounts his sculptures onto blocks of clear acrylic or marble. He has been awarded numerous national awards - his first being in 2002. Murphy prides himself upon his self taught technique, with no artistic training. All the equipment he uses to create his work he designed and created himself, making art that is highly personal and unique to him.
