Description

From the Window, 1958 inscribed with title and dated to the reverse oil on canvas 50.5 x 61cm

Footnote: Provenance: With Irish Exhibition of Living Art Anne Yeats is often reductively defined by her relationships with two men: her father, William Butler Yeats, one of the foremost poets and dramatists of the 20th century, and her uncle, the celebrated Irish painter, Jack Butler Yates, RHA. Yeats began her artistic training aged just 13 at the Royal Hibernian Academy of Arts under the tutelage of Maurice MacGonigal, Henry Tisdall and Demod O’Brien, She began her career as a set and costume designer at the Abbey Theatre, where she designed for several of her father’s productions, including ‘The Resurrection’, ‘On Baile’s Stand’, and ‘Purgatory’. After her successful tenure at the Abbey in 1941, she left to briefly study at Dublin Metropolitan School of Art where she began to experiment with wax and watercolour. The ma.turation of Yeats’ work, often depicting landscapes and scenes of quiet domesticity in a naïve expressionistic style, can be described as both rooted in the Irish tradition and yet highly individualised.

Condition report: Oil on canvas with an artists' supplier stamp on the reverse. The canvas tension is slightly slack and there are minor undulations. The paint layer is in a good condition overall. Near the centre of the picture the paint has come into contact with the glazing and the upper layer has been pulled away. The frame has suffered from some knocks and scuffs and the glazing is very dirty on the outside.
