Description

§ Anne Redpath, OBE, RSA, ARA, LLD, ROI, RBA (Scottish, 1895-1965) The Chapel of St Jean, Tréboul signed 'Anne Redpath' (lower right) pencil, watercolour and gouache 24 x 34.50cm (9 x 13in) Other Notes: In the early summer of 1953, the year immediately following her election to full membership of the Royal Scottish Academy, Redpath travelled to Brittany. Whilst there, much of her time was spent in Tréboul and in the small fishing port of Concarneau (Patrick Bourne, 'Anne Redpath 1895-1965', Atelier Books, Edinburgh, 2004, p.70). Unlike the bold colours and dramatic application of paint used in her Spanish and Corsican landscapes, Redpath's depiction of the Breton countryside and its architecture is characterised by a more restrained palette and emphasis on mass. Redpath painted en plein air using a combination of gouache and watercolour, working into the compositions further using oils after she had returned to her Edinburgh studio. Therefore, the 'Church of St Jean' and 'White Gable, Tréboul' were most likely painted over the course of her stay. Redpath represented the church at St Jean on at least two other occasions. One of her later versions of the church interior, which retains many of the details evident in the present work, is now part of the Scottish Academy's permanent collection and was exhibited in the 1956 Redpath retrospective at the Royal West of England Academy. CONDITIONNo areas of damage apparent.
