Description

William Nicholson, RSA (Scottish, 1781-1844)

Portrait of Major Alexander James Ross, 21st Royal North British Fusiliers, circa 1814, bust-length, wearing a regimental uniform
watercolour on paper
23x 19cm

Footnote:

Ross was severely wounded when serving as a Major in the 21st Fusiliers at the Battle of New Orleans in 1814. Though he subsequently returned to service with his regiment, he died of his wound many years later in Edinburgh. Nicholson retained this watercolour amongst others, presumably for a volume of Edinburgh worthies that he intended to publish.
