Description

William Dickinson after Henry Bunbury

The Propagation of a Lie, stipple engraving on three joined sheets, 1787, showing 18 male figures each with a descriptive caption, 28 x 177cm

This is a satirical cartoon of 18 images of men over three sheets, in different animated positions. All three sheets are present.
There are around 10 tears and holes across the bottom just inside the press mark. Four tears have historic repairs at the back, the largest of which is 3cms. The edges of the sheets are dirty, with small tears outside the press mark. There are stains from a maximum of around 10mm, the rest mainly small foxing. Small holes in the corners indicate that these have been pinned up at some point. There is a crease top to bottom on sheet three, a diagonal crease top to bottom on sheet 2, and shorter crease diagonally nearly across sheet one.
