Description

William Brown (fl. late 19th Century)

The Racer's Dream
signed and dated "W Brown 1896" (lower right) and inscribed with title (to the reverse)
oil on canvas
64 x 79cm

A William Brown worked in the manner of Harry Hall. A picture by him of the famous racehorse Ormonde signed ‘William Brown, Carlisle’ is recorded (see Sally Mitchell, The Dictionary of British Equestrian Artists, 1985, p. 139).

The painting is executed in oil on a linen canvas support which is unlined. The canvas tension is slightly slack and vertical stretcher bar marks have formed at the centre of the painting, following the wooden frame behind. The paint layers are in a good, stable condition overall. Localised areas of overpaint are reasonably well matched to the original. The varnish is semi-matte and even in gloss although slightly milky in the darker areas of the picture. 83 x 96cm framed
