Description

The Fell & Rock Climbing Club, The Alpine Club, British Everest Expedition and Frank Smythe (photographer). An album of mountaineering, climbing and topographical interest containing around 766 black and white photographs of varying size, recording travel and climbing adventures undertaken at home and abroad between 1926 and 1934, the majority titled and dated on each leaf, with index to the inside cover. Locations include the Himalayas, Dolomites, Ortler (Twelve Peak Walk 1926), Engadine, Zermatt, Champex, Bernese Oberland, Bernina, Jungfrau, the Saleinaz/Fiescher/Alelsch etc. glaciers, Marjelen Sea, Venice, Vesuvius erupting May 21st 1930, France, Sicily, Lucerne, Scottish Highlands, Welsh Mountains, The Lake District, London Section of the F.& R.C.C. climbing at Harrison’s Rocks, near Tunbridge Wells, October 28th 1928, etc. Some of the eminent climbers named include Brig. Gen. C.G. Bruce (leader of The British Everest Expedition 1922 & 1924), W.P. Haskett Smith, A.W. Wakefield, G.A. Solly, D. Leighton, T.R. Burnett, G. Seatree, Mrs Nea Morin, Harry Scott, C.F. Hadfield, Fritz Kaufman, Dr. Claude Wilson, McNaught and others. Also included is a photograph entitled ‘The Spectre of the Brocken’ by Frank Smythe (c.1929) showing a silhouetted figure within a halo.
