Description

Studio of Sir Godfrey Kneller, Bt. (British, 1646-1723)

Portrait of Colonel Hon. Philip Howard (1629-1717)
oil on canvas, oval
74.5 x 61.5cm

Provenance:
According to a note dated 1848 on the reverse of the present canvas, which itself is transcribed from an earlier one by the 15th Earl of Suffolk, 8th Earl of Berkshire (1739-1820), the painting is presumed to have descended within the family until acquired by the present owner circa 1980

Footnote:

The Hon. Philip Howard was the seventh son of Thomas Howard, 1st Earl of Berkshire and Lady Elizabeth Cecil. He served as Member of Parliament for Malmesbury from 1662 to 1679 and Westminster from 1689 to 1690. He married the heiress Mary Jennings, who brought a considerable estate to his descendants.

Condition report:

Framed 96 x 83.5cm

The painting is executed in oil on a linen canvas support which has been lined. The canvas has good tension and the picture is in plane. The paint layers are stable with an overall network of age cracks, some slightly raised. The painting is compromised by a degraded varnish layer which has become brittle, developing its own network of age cracks which obscures the paint layers below. The varnish makes the extent of overpaint difficult to determine, there appears to be localised areas in the face and more extensive areas in the background.
