Description

SITWELL (Edith)
Collection of 18 autograph letters signed to Miss Evelyn Wilson, [later Mrs Douglas], circa 1922-26, mainly discussing poetry and Sitwell's writing. In one letter written from Paris, Sitwell says 'I am going to be drawn by Picasso, probably, it will be really exciting. What a great artist'. She then encloses an autograph fragment of her work 'The Sleeping Beauty' [4pp.]. In another letter dated October 1922 she encloses two manuscript poems 'Aubade' and 'Spring'. In another she discusses modern poetry, saying 'Doesn't the state of modern poetry make you feel muddled? It does have that effect on me. It is so untidy, and so unutterably dusty and gritty. I'm sure I don't know what will happen! What are you to do with a generation which quite honestly thinks "The Shropshire Lad" is poetry!". In another she says "Sacheverell has done marvellous new poems. Personally, and quite from impersonal reasons, I think he is the greatest living English poet". Other shorter letters offer invitations to call and meet up. Also included is a signed cabinet portrait photograph of Sitwell; a copy of Facade, Favil Press 1922, one of 150 privately printed copies, inscribed by Sitwell to Evelyn Wilson, with brick pattern covers, and a book of newspaper clippings of prize poems by Evelyn Wilson writing as Lyn Carruthers.
