Footnote: Provenance The collection of the late Monty and Barbie Passes Drawing inspiration from disparate artistic and cultural influences, including French Impressionism, New York Abstract Expressionism, Chinese calligraphy and Japanese Zen painting, American painter and printmaker, Sam Francis, is regarded as one of the 20th century’s foremost masters of colour and light. Marked by intensity of colour and his energetic, gestural application of paint, Francis’ works have been widely exhibited throughout Asia and Europe and are included in the permanent collections of the Kunstmuseum, Basel, the Pompidou Centre, Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, amongst many others.
