Description

Rolex - A WW2 military issue open faced pocket watch,

circa 1940, the signed black dial, 43mm diameter with (originally) luminous Arabic numerals and hands, subsidiary seconds register at 6 o'clock and chemin de fer chapter ring, signed 15 jewel crown wind movement, calibre 540, with onion shaped winder, case, 50mm diameter, verso screw down, engraved with pheon mark and A. 16835 G.S.MK.II

At the outbreak of the Second World War, the British Ministry of Defence purchased pocket watches which met specific MOD standards from numerous Swiss makers. The Rolex General Service Mark II 'A' was available with either a black luminous (as this example) or a white non-luminous dial. Surviving examples with the black dial are now rare and sought after.

Crystal - Surface scratching all over, Loss to the edge at 3 o'clock.

Dial - Overall in good condition. Some very minor deterioration to the 11 and 12 numerals.

Movement - Crown winds, engages and disengages satisfactorily and the hands move freely in both directions. Movement in working order, but not tested for timekeeping or endurance.

Case - Some surface scratching all over, as to be expected and commensurate with age and use. Stamped A.16835 to the rim, matching the engraving to the case back.
