Provenance: The collection of the late Eric Stevens, removed from Hampstead, London John Cooper Powys, the unsung giant of English fiction, was a notable novelist and poet. He published his first collection of poems at the age of 24 and went on to write his first novel in 1915. Powys has been regarded as the successor to Thomas Hardy, to whom he dedicated his first novel. Born into a family of eleven children, his two brothers and a sister were also talented and well-known writers. Powys graduated from Cambridge in 1894 and soon took up a job as an itinerant lecturer for Cambridge and Oxford Universities. In 1905, he went on to lecture in America, where many of his novels were first published. He moved back home with his American partner in 1934 and settled in Wales.
