Footnote:

The youngest of nine children born to English immigrant parents in Maine in 1877, American Modernist painter, poet and essayist, Marsden Hartley, is principally remembered for his close association with the Der Blaue Reiter movement and as a leading figure of the Stieglitz group.

After studying under the instruction of local impressionist artist, Cullen Yates, and attending the Cleveland School of Art, in 1899 Hartley was awarded financial backing to travel to New York, where he would train at William Merritt Chase’s School of Art before transferring to the National Academy of Design. Upon the cessation of his formal training, Hartley led an iterant lifestyle, wandering restlessly from place to place and ferociously consuming art and culture from every corner of the world. The culmination of his travels, which led him across Europe and the Americas, resulted in a highly individualised style, synthesised from a variety of cultures and movements.

Utilising bold lines, flattened space and adamantine forms, the present lot is characteristic of Hartley’s larger body of work.
