Description

Manner of George Romney

Portrait of a young gentleman, half-length, wearing a green coat and white stock
oil on canvas, oval
74 x 59cm

Provenance:
Christie's, South Kensington, 24th September 1980, lot 203, as 'Romney'

Condition report:

95 x 81cm (framed)

The painting is executed in oil on a canvas support which has been lined. The picture is in plane and the paint layer is stable. The handling of the brushwork in the sitter’s face appears very different to the brushy bright blue background which is likely to be later. There is overpaint in the cheeks of the sitter. The surface gloss is uneven with the figure's face having an even sheen but the background is fairly matte. There are some matte lines and spots around the face, possibly caused by damp conditions.
