Saint Blaise the hermit, in a cavern surrounded by wild animals oil on canvas 38.5 x 30.5cm

Footnote: Saint Blaise lived as a hermit in solitude and prayer, but he befriended wild animals. One day a group of hunters seeking wild animals for the amphitheatre stumbled upon Blaise’s cave. They were first surprised and then frightened. The bishop was kneeling in prayer surrounded by patiently waiting wolves, lions and bears.

Condition report: Oil on canvas which has been lined. There are minor undulations across the surface but the tension is good. The paint layer is in a stable condition. Some wear and abrasion to the upper surface. Small, scattered retouchings are well matched to the original. The varnish is clear and glossy but with a layer of dust across the surface. Frame is in a good condition.
