HOFF (Harry) pseud. William COOPER. Collection of 24 first or early editions, mostly novels, but also memoir and short stories, all but one signed and mostly inscribed by the author. It Happened in PRK (1934), Three Marriages (1946), Scenes from Provincial Life (1950), The Struggles of Albert Woods (1952), The Ever Interesting Topic (1953), Winter’s Tales 1 [contributor to] (1955), Disquiet and Peace (1956), Young People (1958), Scenes from Married Life (1961), etc (24).Note: Cambridge educated, Harry Hoff was an undergraduate pupil of C. P. Snow who spent a considerable time in the Civil Service interviewing applicants for posts, and later in attempts to reverse the “brain drain” to North America. Under his pseudonym, William Cooper, he is best known for his series of Life (and Death) novels, five in all- dating from 1950 to 1999. He is widely regarded as a pioneer novelist in realist literature and had a wide impact on later writers from Anthony Burgess to Malcolm Bradbury.Condition report: All are first editions, first printings, apart from the final novel.
