Henry Hindley, York, a George III mahogany 'Chinese Chippendale' longcase clock, the case very similar to a design in Chippendale's Director, the pagoda top hood with 12inch arched signed silvered one-piece dial, 4 pillar movement, the tapering trunk with full length door upon a stepped moulded front plinth, 271cm high Provenance: Mawley Hall, Shropshire Literature: The case design published as plate CXXXVI in the 1754 and 1755 editions of Chippendale's Director. Henry Hindley (1701-1771), a fine and ingenious clockmaker, also created the world’s first telescope powered by a precision clock movement, enabling the telescope to remain fixed on its subject without constant adjustment because of the earth’s rotation (Collection Science Museum, London).ConditionReluctant to keep ticking.  Strikes correctly when hands are advanced.  One piece hood.
