Description

HARRISON MATTHEWS (Leonard) South Georgia, the British Empire's Subantarctic Outpost, a Synopsis of the History of the Island. Bristol: John Wright & Sons Ltd., 1931, 8vo, the author's interleaved copy with original pen and ink and watercolour and pencil illustrations, in publisher's plain blue cloth with gilt spine, together with the publisher's accounts slips for the book inserted, few loose photographs of sea birds, newspaper reviews pasted in at the front; also two printed copies of the book lacking covers and both in poor condition with some losses, staining and cropping.
Note: The first book by the noted zoologist and naturalist, which 'remained the definitive text for fifty years' (ODNB), and is still consulted today.
