'The Deceitful Venomous Tongue' - A study of Eve and the serpent
signed 'F. Shields' (lower left)
pen and ink on laid paper
32 x 11cm

Provenance:
The Maas Gallery, London, from whom acquired by the present owner

Frederic James Shields was a Manchester painter, watercolourist and decorator whose artistic career was determined when he saw the works of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood at the Manchester Art Treasures Exhibition of 1857. He later became a close friend of both Rossetti and Ford Madox Brown.

The present drawing is thought to be a design for the decorative scheme of the Chapel of the Ascension in Bayswater, which was destroyed in World War II and which was one of Shields' most important commissions.

Scattered foxing and spotting throughout. Slight crease approximately 7cm from the top edge, running vertically across the figure's face and shoulder. There appears to be some pitting to the paper in the figure's bosom. There is some white residue particularly in the top left quadrant. Not examined out of frame. Framed 51 x 29.5cm
