Footnote:

The present painting was once part of the contents of Holywell Hall, Lincolnshire. Built by the Goodall family in the 17th century, Holywell Hall was given to Samuel Reynardson (1704-1797) by his aunt, Lady Mary Barnardiston, on his marriage to Sarah Knipe in 1732. The gardens and orangery in the grounds are thought to have been built by Samuel as a wedding present to his wife. Their descendants lived at Holywell until the 1950s. Since then, the property has had various owners, notably Princess Yuri Galitzine (1925-1999) who bought the estate in 1994. Following the death of her husband Prince Yuri in 2003, Holywell was sold to Robert and Sally Gillespie, who lived there until 2013.

Condition report:

86 x 73cm (framed)

The painting is executed in oil on a canvas support which has been lined. The picture is in plane and the canvas tension is good. The paint layer is stable overall but has suffered from wear and abrasion in the past. There is extensive overpaint in the sitter’s face, hair and dress. The overpaint has discoloured becoming either pale or brown, leading to a mottled appearance. The varnish is clear, glossy and even.
