About this lot

Description

A still life of a gold-coloured ewer, grapes, peaches, plums, and other fruit on a stone ledge
signed and dated 'E H Stannard 18(52?)' (lower left)
oil on canvas
42 x 37cm

The ewer depicted in this painting could be from the collection of the Norwich City civic plate of silver gilt items which are held at the Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery.

55 x 49.5cm framed

The painting is executed in oil on a fine weave linen canvas support which has been lined. The canvas tension is stiff and the picture is in plane. The paint layer has a network of fine wrinkles, possibly caused during the lining process. Overall, the paint layer is stable and secure. There are areas of overpaint across the surface reinforcing dark passages of the composition which have suffered from wear. In some areas the overpaint has darkened over time and are now visible. The varnish layer is thin and even with a light layer of surface dirt.
