Provenance: Acquired at the Boydell Galleries, Liverpool, in the early 1960s by R F Glazebrook of Brynbella, North Wales; Sotheby's, Brynbella House sale, 1-2 June 1994, lot 396 (£7,500) where purchased by the present owner Other Notes: Elias Childe established his reputation as a landscape painter, known particularly for his striking skies and moonlight effects. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1798, when he was living at 29 Compton Street, Soho, with his younger brother James, who was also an artist. In 1825, he was elected a fellow of the Society of British Artists. Throughout his career, he exhibited over 500 paintings. An example of his work is in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.
