Footnote: Francis Howden was an active and prolific Edinburgh silversmith. The son of a farmer, he was apprenticed to Alexander Aitchison II. In 1782, he went into business with John Taylor - a partnership which ended in 1784 when Taylor died. Howden married in 1790 and had five children, one of whom, also called Francis, went on to become a silversmith in his own right. However, he tragically drowned in the Blackadder river, which forms part of the river Tweed, at the age of 32. Howden died in October 1848 at the age of 90.
